Terrible! A food allergy, the fear of many dog and cat owners, now affects almost one in three animals. In Germany alone, around 3 million dogs are confronted with this problem, and in Austria, around 190,000*.

In dogs, food allergies are said to be responsible for over 1% of all skin diseases and 10% of all allergic skin diseases. If food intolerances, including allergies and intolerances, are added together, studies have already estimated that they account for over 60%** of cases. Food allergies are said to be the third most common allergic skin disease in dogs, after flea bite allergies and atopy.

These terms are often confused, but differentiation is important, especially for optimal feeding. The difference between "allergy" and "intolerance" lies in the body's reaction to the ingredient. In the case of an intolerance, there is a metabolic disorder and the gastrointestinal tract reacts. In the case of a true allergy, the immune system views the substance as an invader and attacks it with all its might. The most common symptoms are vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite and even weight loss. In the case of local skin diseases, the face, paws, armpits and ears of dogs and cats are particularly affected by sometimes severe inflammation. One study even reported dogs suffering from musculoskeletal disorders, central nervous system disorders and idiopathic epilepsy in connection with allergies.
